How Has Scofield Memorial Built Up the Saints?

Over the years, the primary means of building up the saints has been a high quality Bible teaching program from the pulpit and in the Sunday school classes. This has been touched upon several times in the course of this paper, and in interviews with members it is a subject that is brought up constantly. Clearly, the Sunday school ministry and the teaching ministry from the pulpit at Scofield Memorial Church have touched many people's lives.

C. I. Scofield initially wrote his Bible Correspondence course (which he personally supervised) at this church to train laymen. Eventually this became incorporated into Moody Bible Institute's academic program. Dr. Roper did a similar thing with his six-year Through the Bible plan, which had every member of the church going through the Bible systematically once each six years.

The Keswick Bible Conferences held at Swiss and Carroll for several years starting in 1964 were a tremendous benefit to the local members. They were able to meet and hear some of the greatest preachers of that time, and those who participated in those conferences still remember them as exciting memories.

Until the early 1990's, the Wednesday evening prayer meeting included a set of Bible study electives that members could take. This was a very popular way for new members to be taught by capable teachers or pastors in the church, to grow spiritually, and to get to know each other.
In the last 15 years, Scofield has utilized the "flock group" concept with lay shepherds to bring the community into closer fellowship and encourage growth. Pastor Phil Humphries was initially brought to this church to oversee this ministry, and we currently have over 30 lay shepherds leading flock groups twice a month in homes on Sunday evenings.

The Women's Ministry over the years at Scofield Memorial Church has been an important part of discipling the women of the church. The church has had many talented women Bible teachers, and their work is too often not noticed. In the last 30 years, the Women's Ministry has been one of the major contributors to building up the ladies of the church and deepening friendships. Several times a week Bible classes directly sponsored by the Women's Ministry are conducted at the church. In 2000, Scofield Memorial Church hired its first Director of Women's Ministry, who coordinates the women's programs at the church.
