Music Ministry

Scofield Memorial Church has never been the leading edge trendsetter for Christian music, and has typically been on the conservative side of musical taste. God has gifted the church with many quality musicians, and the church has over the years been able to do many high quality musical programs.
In recent years, Scofield Memorial Church has been committed to a blended service, where the best of the old and new are used together, with a desire to be open to newer music that has quality. However, in recent years Scofield has attempted to widen the range of musical expression used in musical programs and in church services with an effort to introduce more contemporary music into the worship services.

This attempt received mixed reviews. Just as individuals in the church have personal convictions and preferences about what constitutes "good" music, there is wide variation in the church body about what kinds of music are appropriate for worship. The subject was controversial from 1998 until 2002, as what seems to be great music for some was totally crossing the line for others.

A Biblical understanding of worship helps us identify Whom we are supposed to please and what God's requirements for worship are. A serious study of Scripture on the subject of "worship" was made by the elder board in 2002-2003, and the comprehensive position paper on worship was produced. This paper has been well received, and has helped the church focus on worship as opposed to style.
